Message from the President

Dear ASHRAE members and friends,

The ASHRAE year is wrapping up, and we are finishing strong. Our recent events have been very well attended, and I would like to thank all of our committee chairs for their time and efforts setting up events for our Student Activities, Women in ASHRAE, Young Engineers in ASHRAE, RP Trap Shoot, Distinguished Lecturer meetings, and Los Alamos meetings. Our team consists of all volunteers, and we would not be able to provide these events without their leadership.

I’m pleased to announce the slate for the 2019-2020 Board of Governors for the New Mexico Chapter as follows:

President: Stacey Chan
President-Elect: Frederick Earnest
Treasurer: Ryan Shaffer
Secretary: Karen Quezada
Past President: Jerry Hine
Board Member: Joe Higham
Board Member: Rex Stockwell

I look forward to continuing the Chapter’s success next year. We will be starting the 2019-2020 year with hosting the Region IX chapter regional conference (CRC) in conjunction with Region X in San Diego, California, on August 18 - 20. This 3 day event will provide leadership training, business sessions, workshops, technical sessions, and networking opportunities. A special thank you to our CRC Committee Chairs Joe Higham and Stephen Forner for their efforts organizing the event.

Thank you to all who have attended our events so far this year. If you have feedback on any of our activities, or if you are interested in getting more involved, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Message from the President

“Being a part of something bigger”. This is one of the many reasons why I love being involved in ASHRAE.

At the most recent ASHRAE Winter Meeting, I had the amazing opportunity to attend as a participant in the program LeadRS (Leadership Development through Regional Support). I witnessed the inner workings of Society. Council meetings and Board meetings discussed and voted on motions from Chapters around the world. From policy and budget changes to updating the Councils and technical programs, ASHARE is making an impact on the future of our industry. It’s inspiring. And it all begins right here at the Chapter level.

Are there changes you’d like to see in ASHRAE? An old policy that should be updated, or a new idea that could be implemented? It could be in membership benefits, publications, e-Learning, certifications, conferences and expos, or anything else! Contact me and we can work together to write a motion to make those changes.

Join us as we continue to improve ASHRAE and our industry. Let’s work together to shape tomorrow’s built environment today. Let’s be a part of something bigger.

Sincerely,

Stacey Chan

Presentation Info:

ASHRAE Standard 62.1 “Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality,” provides minimum requirements for proper ventilation in commercial, institutional and hi-rise residential buildings. The basis for the major model codes, a prerequisite for LEED certification, and often an important factor in helping to establish the standard-of-care for ventilation system designers, Standard 62.1 cannot be ignored. ASHRAE Standing Standards Project Committee, SSPC 62.1, takes care of this “continuous maintenance” standard, publishing changes to it every 18 months. As a former SSPC 62.1 Chairman and a current member of the committee, Dennis Stanke is in a unique position to explain the most up-to-date requirements in the standard and discuss expected future requirements.

With a BSME from the University of Wisconsin, Dennis joined Trane in 1973, as a controls development engineer. After 42 years, he retired from Trane as Staff Applications Engineer specializing in airside systems including controls, ventilation, indoor air quality, and dehumidification. He has written numerous applications manuals and newsletters, has published many technical articles and columns, and has appeared in many Trane Engineers Newsletter Live broadcasts.

An ASHRAE Fellow and Life Member, Dennis is a former Chairman and current member for both ASHRAE Standard 62.1, “Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality,” and ASHRAE Standard 189.1, “Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings.” He is also a member of the Standards Committee and Chair the Code Interaction Subcommittee (CIS).

February 2017 Message from the President

Dear Members,

I hope groundhog day found you enjoying the last months of winter before the spring time and new construction gets into full gear.

Thank you to all who joined the Board of Governors on February 3rd for a bowling event at the Main Event. A fun afternoon was had by all!

This newsletter includes an ASHRAE press release from the Winter ASHRAE and AHR Expo. As you can see, this was a very successful event with almost 70,000 visitors. I was among those visitors and I can assure you that the men's bathroom lines were long. The event was very successful and opened my eyes to many new products and systems introduced. With the recent EPA SNAP refrigerants ruling, many manufacturers introduced new ways of being energy efficient and reducing the global warming potential of any refrigerant leaks. I hope you consider going to the semi-annual winter meeting in Chicago 2018.

The ASHRAE Summer meeting will be held in Long Beach California this year. It isn't too early to start making plans to hit the beach!

And finally, just a reminder about the new program we are introducing. The chapter would like to pay for the cost of future chapter leaders to attend this event. The Spring 2017 YEA Leadership Weekend will be held in Denver, CO from March 3-5, 2017. Registration includes hotel accommodations for Friday and Saturday, meals during the event (dinner on Friday, all meals on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday), and all necessary materials and resources. Airfare and any ground transportation costs are not included. If you (or one of your employees) are interested in attending, please send me interested candidates!

http://www.ashrae.org/membership--conferences/young-engineers-in-ashrae/yea-leadership-weekend

Feel free to e-mail me at stephen.forner@trane.com with your thoughts and suggestions.

Sincerely,

Stephen Forner

Membership Promotion Committee Update

Exciting news for the membership committee this month. Ariel Nephew of QA Engineering has graciously donated her time to serve as the Retention Chair for membership. Ariel is a recent graduate from the UNM mechanical engineering program. She learned about our industry by taking the HVAC class (ME365) and has been able to quickly find a job after graduating, and through the donations that the ASHRAE membership made in supplying text books to the students was interested in working with the chapter now that she has begun her professional career. Please welcome Ariel to her new position and to our industry when you have an opportunity to meet her. Thank you for volunteering Ariel, we are all happy to have you on board.

Please remember if you have any colleagues and friends in the industry that are not currently part of the chapter, invite them to a meeting and introduce them around, there are many benefits to ASHRAE membership and we are always looking to add to the roster. Thank you all for your dedication to making the New Mexico chapter successful.

December 2016 Message from the President

Dear Members,

Three of the New Mexico Chapter Board of Governors participated in a program called YEA Leadership Weekend to help develop leadership skills. Joe, Stacey and myself would love to share our experiences with any members under 35 years old who are interested in developing their leadership skills with a group of other ASHRAE members. I attended the YEA Leadership Weekend in Portland, OR. We had two days of exercises and self-reflection to help us all develop our leadership style. The trainer worked with our existing traits to help maximize our effectiveness as leaders. In addition, we went bowling in downtown Portland. Portland is known for coffee and breweries. The hotel was in the middle of downtown allowed us to explore the breweries and in the morning, find the closest coffee house.

Stacey Chan traveled to San Diego, CA for her Leadership Weekend: “It was an enriching experience that helped me understand both my personal and professional goals. After attending YEA Leadership Weekend, I became committed to the ASHRAE mission: shaping tomorrow’s built environment today. I recommend this program to any aspiring leaders.”

Joe Higham traveled to Denver for his Leadership Weekend: “The personality survey and exercises we went through over the weekend helped me understand what direction to pursue in my career. We also had a session on increasing involvement in ASHRAE that was great. I highly recommend the YEA Leadership weekend for all future leaders.”

The chapter would like to pay for the registration of future chapter leaders to attend this event. If you (or one of your employees) are interested in attending, e-mail me at stephen.forner@trane.com.

November 2016 Message from the President

Dear Members,

This summer I was selected by Region XI to be in the LeaDRS program. The LeaDRS program is an opportunity for YEA members (ASHRAE members under 35) to shadow one of the Board of Directors of the ASHRAE organization at the Winter or Annual (summer) meetings. The current Region XI director is Blake Ellis. I shadowed Blake throughout his meetings covering ASHRAE business as diverse as the precise wording of the new BACnet IT standard, to the decision about how or if to reward chapters for having female Board of Governor members, to the upcoming requirement for yearly chapter financial audits. I met with David Underwood, the former president of ASHRAE, and Tim Wentz, the current president of ASHRAE. It was 5 days of meetings from 8 am to 5 pm with evening social gatherings until late into the night. I encourage anyone under 35 to consider applying for this opportunity! Feel free to contact me with any questions (stephen.forner@trane.com)!

ASHRAE society conducts an enormous amount of business to keep the chapters up and running each year. Almost all the work was performed by volunteers with support from the families and companies. Of the 1,800 members conducting society business this summer, only two were from the New Mexico chapter. I hope to help change the level of involvement in the New Mexico chapter and at the society level. Here are some ideas:

-If you are interested in standards and want to get updates on the most recent developments in standards you care about, join a Technical Committee!

-If you like organizing events and being at the center of the action, join a Standing Committee!

-If you like (or don’t like) the New Mexico chapter’s activities, join the New Mexico Board of Governors (e-mail me Stephen.forner@trane.com)!

-If you think the ASHRAE Journal got something wrong, tell the editor (jayscott@ashrae.org)!

I look forward to hearing about all the ways our chapter contributed to ASHRAE this year!

Comments? E-mail me at stephen.forner@trane.com with your thoughts.

Sincerely,
October 2016 Message from the President

Dear Members,

As we say farewell to the Balloon Fiesta revelers and welcome in the cool (and economizer friendly) weather of autumn, I would like to update you on the happenings at this summer’s regional conference. Each summer the Chapter Regional Conference (CRC) is hosted by a rotating chapter. This summer the conference was in Omaha Nebraska, home of 2016-2017 ASHRAE Society President, Tim Wentz.

During the 2016 CRC, the New Mexico Chapter was recognized with many awards, almost too many to count! Awards include “Most Improved Chapter” which was awarded thanks to increasing support from the local community! Thank you to everyone who has participated in ASHRAE over the last 3 years! We also received the “Man-Mile Award” which is the award given to the chapter who brought the most people, the most distance total. Usually this award is given to a large chapter because the large chapters bring many people, but this CRC was centrally located and the New Mexico chapter brought many people to attend the meeting. Thank you to all who attended the CRC!

During the CRC the Board is able to meet with other chapter’s officers, regional and even Society delegates to get new ideas and infuse enthusiasm for ASHRAE’s goals. New members of the Board also get training on how to perform their roles on the Board. The Board also conducts the business of ASHRAE by voting on important motions which eventually make it to the Society to be implemented. This year an important motion was passed which allows the Region to sponsor up to 3 ASHRAE members under 35 years old to YEA Leadership Weekend. If you or someone you know are interested in attending YEA Leadership Weekend (a $900 training) free of charge, please contact me at stephen.forner@trane.com.

Another motion which passed this year was adding monitoring of chapter websites to the points system which grades chapter progress. Currently that is not a point which is monitored. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Stacey Chan (current Treasurer), the New Mexico Chapter scored the highest on the compliance scale! If you haven’t visited our website recently, it was upgraded last year: www.newmexicoashrae.com.

New Mexico Chapter will host the CRC in August 2019. About 200 Region IX members will descend on Albuquerque to keep the ASHRAE spirit thriving! If you are interested in volunteering or have suggestions for hotels, events, golf, activities or dinners, please contact me at stephen.forner@trane.com. The more ideas we get, the better the CRC will be! I look forward to an outpouring of creativity!

Feel free to e-mail me at stephen.forner@trane.com with your thoughts and suggestions.
Sincerely,
Message from the President

Welcome back from the summer to the 2016-2017 ASHRAE year. We have many tremendous programs planned for this year. In light of all the work the Board of Governors does to keep the chapter running, I would like to thank a couple of recent BOG members. As Seneca said “Men do not care how nobly they live, but only how long, although it is within the reach of every man to live nobly, but within no man's power to live long.” We must appreciate all the time that these two individuals invested in running the chapter during a drought in chapter leadership.

Morgan Royce just finished a two year stint as the Research Promotion chair. He raised over $15,000 for ASHRAE to invest in new research. Joe Higham just finished two years where he was the defacto president. He ran the chapter with adroitness and to great regional acclaim. His second year as President was the first year since 2011 where the chapter accomplished the regionally set PAOE goals. Thank you both for your enormous contributions.

In order for no volunteer to ever be asked commit to the extra time which Morgan and Joe gave to the chapter, we will be on a concerted Board of Governors recruitment campaign this year.

This space will serve as a series of points on the varied ways which you can be more involved in ASHRAE. My main ask: read the newsletter and sign up for events. As a first step to encourage this participation, anyone who contacts me with suggestions on how to better the chapter before the first meeting will receive entrance to a chapter meeting of their choosing this year paid by me. Feel free to e-mail me at stephen.forner@trane.com with your thoughts and suggestions for the year.

Starting with a brief historical review, and some of the trends in research, predictions are made as to what the future might be in air conditioning for human comfort. The presentation could be considered “technically entertaining.” Suggesting the fallacies of predictions, it shows the historical delays from defining a concept to the marketing of an actual product. The implications to our industry are noted as well.

Presentation

Solar heat connects most easily with hydronic heating systems because solar thermal panels provide hot fluid at temperatures that are compatible with common heat loads. However, in order to make the best use of the solar heat when it is available and minimize parasitic heat loss and pump (electric) power, a heating system design must treat all heat sources, loads and storage components as an integrated system.

In a conventional system, a plumbing design based on primary and secondary loops allows heat to be transferred from the fuel-fired heat source to any load connected to the primary loop. This concept can be successfully extended to two primary loops connected through a heat exchanger for a system utilizing both solar and backup heat sources. The advantages are numerous, but can be summarized as the ability to move heat from any place in the system to any other place at any time. Even components that alternately function as both heat loads and heat sources can be easily controlled in this configuration.

This ‘dual primary loop’ concept has been used as a template in recent years to standardize the design and installation of complex solar/hydronic heating systems with good results. Well over 100 systems in New Mexico and dozens in other states have been installed in recent years using this configuration. Design details taken from these systems will be presented, utilizing solar thermal panels, heat pumps, boilers, wood stoves and waste heat sources and delivering heat to radiant floors, DHW tanks, pools, baseboard radiators and fan coils. Performance data from remote monitoring and continuous automatic logging is also available to view. Existing installations range from small residences of 1000 – 3000 square feet up to small commercial sized buildings up to 25,000 square feet.

About the Speaker

Bristol L. Stickney, BSME
SolarLogic, LLC, Santa Fe, NM

Mr. Bristol Stickney is the Chief Technical Officer of SolarLogic LLC in Santa Fe, NM. With over 35 years of experience in solar heating, Bristol Stickney is a well-known authority on solar hydronic heating systems.

Bristol worked with the New Mexico Solar Energy Association for over a decade as Staff Engineer, Director of Research, Associate Director, Treasurer and Vice Chairman of the Board. During his tenure at NMSEA, he developed unique control system concepts that simplify the design of solar heating systems while simultaneously optimized their effectiveness. These innovations subsequently led to well over 100 of his designs implemented and installed by Cedar Mountain Solar in New Mexico. It is Mr. Stickney’s knowledge, expertise and experience that have provided the theoretical and practical bases for SolarLogic’s SLASH-D and SLIC products. These streamline the standardized design and control of complex solar heating in buildings.

Prior to his work with Cedar Mountain Solar, Bristol was Chief Engineer of Coyne Solar Manufacturing Company for 5 years, where he designed and oversaw assembly of batch solar water heaters, many of which are still in use. Bristol also worked as a Research Associate with Amory Lovins at the E-source office of the Rocky Mountain Institute.

Bristol Stickney has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maine at Orono. Bristol holds half a dozen patents in solar/hydronic heating and a patent on a DC hydronic heating control, called the “SETH System,” that reduces the electrical demand of a hydronic heating system by up to 80%.

Bristol currently writes a monthly column on “The 6 Principles of Good Solar Hydronic Heating System Design” which is published in national magazines such as Plumbing and Hydronic Contractor and Plumbing Engineer. He also has had articles appearing in Solar Pro, Home Power, Radiant Living, and the ASHRAE Journal.

“Green Buildings”, for all their merits and good intentions, can be flawed, when it comes to occupant comfort and occupant health. Green buildings are often carefully designed and constructed to use recycled, recyclable, locally produced, renewable and energy efficient materials, but indoor environmental quality or IEQ is habitually not high on the priority list of even the most vigilant of green designers and builders.

Aside from sometimes overlooking IEQ, green buildings are often plagued by the “Devil that we don’t know.” New, unproven building materials or installation techniques applied to save money or save the environment can wreak unexpected consequences on IEQ. Like our bodies, a building is a collection of individual materials (think tissues). These materials make up building components (think organs). Groups of components make up building systems (think body systems like respiratory, circulatory, nervous, etc.). These systems all work independently and collectively in a complicated puzzle make up the whole building or the body. Insult, remove or damage one piece of this complicated puzzle in a building or a body and the entire structure can become ill.

Come and learn about a variety of “green building” techniques that negatively impacted actual buildings. We will discuss the who, what, when, where and why of various failures. We will provide real world examples. We will discuss lessons learned in order to help in the mitigation or prevention of these green-gone-bad examples.

Message from the President

Thanksgiving is behind us and now it’s time to grind through the next few weeks to get to some more time off. December is about the halfway mark through our ASHRAE year and if you haven’t made it out to a chapter meeting yet, I really suggest you try. We have some great speakers lined up for the upcoming months.

Last month we had Charles Fledderman present on ethics, allowing many of us to get our 2 hours of ethics PDHs required to renew our PE licenses. We had a very solid turnout and will look at providing ethics training in future years. Happy Holidays

Message from the President

Temperatures are dropping, Thanksgiving will soon be upon us and Christmas will be here before we know it. For those of us who need to renew our PE licenses this year, we are scrambling to get our PDHs completed and documented. This month we will be helping some of you get your 2 required hours of Ethics and for only $40. A real bargain considering you also get a Pappadeaux lunch. I encourage members without PEs to come out and gain some insight into the ethical decision making process.

This morning I participated in a STEM event held at Comanche Elementary. I used an ASHRAE provided activity, “Sliders Gliders” to teach the students about the iterative design process. Please notify me if you participate in a K-12 activity related to STEM. If you are asked to participate in an event, we can provide an activity and materials. The chapter leadership is always willing to step in and help you put something together for students.

I look forward to seeing you at our next chapter meeting and at our Bowling event on November 13th.

President's Message - October 2015

In September we held our annual golf tournament. Birdies and bogeys were scored, beverages were enjoyed, bonds were built. We were able to raise over $8,000 for scholarships and scientific research. I want to recognize the tireless efforts of our dedicated volunteers. I would also like to thank our generous sponsors for their support. We plan to hold next year’s tournament at UNM South Course again. Please reach out to any of the chapter’s leaders to provide comments or concerns about the tournament.

Stephen has lined up some outstanding speakers for the coming meetings and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the meetings. Ryan is working on some great social events to help bring us all together in less formal settings and grow our bonds of community.

Have a happy and safe Balloon Fiesta and I hope you don’t spend too much time stuck in traffic.
