Dear Members,

Three of the New Mexico Chapter Board of Governors participated in a program called YEA Leadership Weekend to help develop leadership skills. Joe, Stacey and myself would love to share our experiences with any members under 35 years old who are interested in developing their leadership skills with a group of other ASHRAE members. I attended the YEA Leadership Weekend in Portland, OR. We had two days of exercises and self-reflection to help us all develop our leadership style. The trainer worked with our existing traits to help maximize our effectiveness as leaders. In addition, we went bowling in downtown Portland. Portland is known for coffee and breweries. The hotel was in the middle of downtown allowed us to explore the breweries and in the morning, find the closest coffee house.

Stacey Chan traveled to San Diego, CA for her Leadership Weekend: “It was an enriching experience that helped me understand both my personal and professional goals. After attending YEA Leadership Weekend, I became committed to the ASHRAE mission: shaping tomorrow’s built environment today. I recommend this program to any aspiring leaders.”

Joe Higham traveled to Denver for his Leadership Weekend:  “The personality survey and exercises we went through over the weekend helped me understand what direction to pursue in my career. We also had a session on increasing involvement in ASHRAE that was great. I highly recommend the YEA Leadership weekend for all future leaders.”

The chapter would like to pay for the registration of future chapter leaders to attend this event. The Spring 2017 YEA Leadership Weekend will be held in Denver, CO from March 3-5, 2017. Registration includes hotel accommodations for Friday and Saturday, meals during the event (dinner on Friday, all meals on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday), and all necessary materials and resources.
