    Dear ASHRAE members and friends,

The ASHRAE year is wrapping up, and we are finishing strong. Our recent events have been very well attended, and I would like to thank all of our committee chairs for their time and efforts setting up events for our Student Activities, Women in ASHRAE, Young Engineers in ASHRAE, RP Trap Shoot, Distinguished Lecturer meetings, and Los Alamos meetings. Our team consists of all volunteers, and we would not be able to provide these events without their leadership.

I’m pleased to announce the slate for the 2019-2020 Board of Governors for the New Mexico Chapter as follows:

    President: Stacey Chan
    President-Elect: Frederick Earnest
    Treasurer: Ryan Shaffer
    Secretary: Karen Quezada
    Past President: Jerry Hine
    Board Member: Joe Higham
    Board Member: Rex Stockwell

I look forward to continuing the Chapter’s success next year. We will be starting the 2019-2020 year with hosting the Region IX chapter regional conference (CRC) in conjunction with Region X in San Diego, California, on August 18 - 20. This 3 day event will provide leadership training, business sessions, workshops, technical sessions, and networking opportunities. A special thank you to our CRC Committee Chairs Joe Higham and Stephen Forner for their efforts organizing the event.

Thank you to all who have attended our events so far this year. If you have feedback on any of our activities, or if you are interested in getting more involved, please feel free to contact me.

    Sincerely,

    Stacey Chan
    President

“Being a part of something bigger”. This is one of the many reasons why I love being involved in ASHRAE.

At the most recent ASHRAE Winter Meeting, I had the amazing opportunity to attend as a participant in the program LeadRS (Leadership Development through Regional Support). I witnessed the inner workings of Society. Council meetings and Board meetings discussed and voted on motions from Chapters around the world. From policy and budget changes to updating the Councils and technical programs, ASHARE is making an impact on the future of our industry. It’s inspiring. And it all begins right here at the Chapter level.

Are there changes you’d like to see in ASHRAE? An old policy that should be updated, or a new idea that could be implemented? It could be in membership benefits, publications, e-Learning, certifications, conferences and expos, or anything else! Contact me and we can work together to write a motion to make those changes.

Join us as we continue to improve ASHRAE and our industry. Let’s work together to shape tomorrow’s built environment today. Let’s be a part of something bigger.

    Sincerely,

    Stacey Chan
    President

Join us for our next chapter meeting on March 14, 2017. The topic is "Standard 62.1 Update" by Distinguished Lecturer Dennis Stanke.

    11:30am - 1:00pm
    Pappadeux Seafood Kitchen
    $25 - Members
    $30 - Guests

    Presentation Info:

ASHRAE Standard 62.1 “Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality,” provides minimum requirements for proper ventilation in commercial, institutional and hi-rise residential buildings. The basis for the major model codes, a prerequisite for LEED certification, and often an important factor in helping to establish the standard-of-care for ventilation system designers, Standard 62.1 cannot be ignored. ASHRAE Standing Standards Project Committee, SSPC 62.1, takes care of this “continuous maintenance” standard, publishing changes to it every 18 months. As a former SSPC 62.1 Chairman and a current member of the committee, Dennis Stanke is in a unique position to explain the most up-to-date requirements in the standard and discuss expected future requirements.

    Speaker Bio:

With a BSME from the University of Wisconsin, Dennis joined Trane in 1973, as a controls development engineer. After 42 years, he retired from Trane as Staff Applications Engineer specializing in airside systems including controls, ventilation, indoor air quality, and dehumidification. He has written numerous applications manuals and newsletters, has published many technical articles and columns, and has appeared in many Trane Engineers Newsletter Live broadcasts.

An ASHRAE Fellow and Life Member, Dennis is a former Chairman and current member for both ASHRAE Standard 62.1, “Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality,” and ASHRAE Standard 189.1, “Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings.” He is also a member of the Standards Committee and Chair the Code Interaction Subcommittee (CIS).

    Dear Members,

I hope groundhog day found you enjoying the last months of winter before the spring time and new construction gets into full gear.

Thank you to all who joined the Board of Governors on February 3rd for a bowling event at the Main Event. A fun afternoon was had by all!

This newsletter includes an ASHRAE press release from the Winter ASHRAE and AHR Expo. As you can see, this was a very successful event with almost 70,000 visitors. I was among those visitors and I can assure you that the men's bathroom lines were long. The event was very successful and opened my eyes to many new products and systems introduced. With the recent EPA SNAP refrigerants ruling, many manufacturers introduced new ways of being energy efficient and reducing the global warming potential of any refrigerant leaks. I hope you consider going to the semi-annual winter meeting in Chicago 2018.

The ASHRAE Summer meeting will be held in Long Beach California this year. It isn't too early to start making plans to hit the beach!

And finally, just a reminder about the new program we are introducing. The chapter would like to pay for the cost of future chapter leaders to attend this event. The Spring 2017 YEA Leadership Weekend will be held in Denver, CO from March 3-5, 2017. Registration includes hotel accommodations for Friday and Saturday, meals during the event (dinner on Friday, all meals on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday), and all necessary materials and resources. Airfare and any ground transportation costs are not included. If you (or one of your employees) are interested in attending, please send me interested candidates!

    Dear Members,

Happy New Year! I wish you a healthy, happy and prosperous 2017! The ASHRAE year flew by! The BOG has 5 more programs scheduled for this year. We look forward to seeing you at all the programs. Please make sure to check the newsletter for an updated schedule.

Make plans to attend the 2017 ASHRAE Winter Meeting in Las Vegas on Jan 28 - Feb 1. This is looking to be the largest AHR Expo outside of Chicago and possibly the largest ASHRAE meeting EVER! The AHR Expo is free to attend with advanced registration, so make sure to register early! For more information, please click here.

Region IX (which the New Mexico Chapter is part of) will be holding a regional dinner during the Winter Conference in Las Vegas. This event is an awesome way to meet with many other ASHRAE members from our region and get to know some of the regional officers. Sunday, January 29, 2015 at 7:30pm, Carmine's Las Vegas, The Forum Shops at Caesars. To RSVP, email Blake at blakeashrae@gmail.com. The cost is $25 for members and is free for students.

Exciting news for the membership committee this month. Ariel Nephew of QA Engineering has graciously donated her time to serve as the Retention Chair for membership. Ariel is a recent graduate from the UNM mechanical engineering program. She learned about our industry by taking the HVAC class (ME365) and has been able to quickly find a job after graduating, and through the donations that the ASHRAE membership made in supplying text books to the students was interested in working with the chapter now that she has begun her professional career. Please welcome Ariel to her new position and to our industry when you have an opportunity to meet her. Thank you for volunteering Ariel, we are all happy to have you on board.

Please remember if you have any colleagues and friends in the industry that are not currently part of the chapter, invite them to a meeting and introduce them around, there are many benefits to ASHRAE membership and we are always looking to add to the roster. Thank you all for your dedication to making the New Mexico chapter successful.
