Hello everyone,
For our May ASHRAE meeting our guest speaker Allen Anaya will be delivering ASHRAE Distinguished Lecture on: Heat Pump Optimization.
We will focus our conversation on 3 primary areas regarding heating operation:
- Heat Pump Operational Range:
Heat Pumps are Not Created Equal: Be Aware of what you want vs What you are specifying
Understand the Defrost Cycle
We will briefly discuss standard operational ranges and defrost cycles of standard types of heat pumps from Packaged Air Cooled to Spilt Systems to VRF/VRV.
Do we need Supplemental Heat?
If so; How Much??
How to size to ensure that we have sufficient heating during all operational times without oversizing the heat pump an unreasonable amount.
- What can we do different in our designs to better utilize heat pumps?
Overhead Heating – We all seem to like hot air (>90°F) leaving our diffusers at low cfm/velocities despite what 62.1 says.
We’ll discuss the impacts of this and what we can do differently to maximize your heat pump usage while minimizing the use of any supplemental heating.
About the Speaker
Allen Anaya has over 35 years of HVAC experience from AHU manufacturing to product installation and operation. He received two years of education from Texas Tech University, but the majority of his knowledge comes from studying ASHRAE standards and the school of hard knocks. Allen currently works as the Regional Fundamentals and Systems Educator for Varitec Solutions. Since 1990, Allen has worked for various HVAC manufacturers and spent 23 years as a Sales Engineer for WM Carroll and Varitec Solutions. Allen continues to be actively involved with ASHRAE at the local level, as he enjoys sharing his vast experience of product design and real-life field experience with air handling systems and HVAC system fundamentals. When not working through HVAC system issues and challenges, Allen enjoys travel and golf.
