Dear Members,

Three of the New Mexico Chapter Board of Governors participated in a program called YEA Leadership Weekend to help develop leadership skills. Joe, Stacey and myself would love to share our experiences with any members under 35 years old who are interested in developing their leadership skills with a group of other ASHRAE members. I attended the YEA Leadership Weekend in Portland, OR. We had two days of exercises and self-reflection to help us all develop our leadership style. The trainer worked with our existing traits to help maximize our effectiveness as leaders. In addition, we went bowling in downtown Portland. Portland is known for coffee and breweries. The hotel was in the middle of downtown allowed us to explore the breweries and in the morning, find the closest coffee house.

Stacey Chan traveled to San Diego, CA for her Leadership Weekend: “It was an enriching experience that helped me understand both my personal and professional goals. After attending YEA Leadership Weekend, I became committed to the ASHRAE mission: shaping tomorrow’s built environment today. I recommend this program to any aspiring leaders.”

Joe Higham traveled to Denver for his Leadership Weekend:  “The personality survey and exercises we went through over the weekend helped me understand what direction to pursue in my career. We also had a session on increasing involvement in ASHRAE that was great. I highly recommend the YEA Leadership weekend for all future leaders.”

The chapter would like to pay for the registration of future chapter leaders to attend this event. The Spring 2017 YEA Leadership Weekend will be held in Denver, CO from March 3-5, 2017. Registration includes hotel accommodations for Friday and Saturday, meals during the event (dinner on Friday, all meals on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday), and all necessary materials and resources. Dear Members,

This summer I was selected by Region XI to be in the LeaDRS program. The LeaDRS program is an opportunity for YEA members (ASHRAE members under 35) to shadow one of the Board of Directors of the ASHRAE organization at the Winter or Annual (summer) meetings. The current Region XI director is Blake Ellis. I shadowed Blake throughout his meetings covering ASHRAE business as diverse as the precise wording of the new BACnet IT standard, to the decision about how or if to reward chapters for having female Board of Governor members, to the upcoming requirement for yearly chapter financial audits. I met with David Underwood, the former president of ASHRAE, and Tim Wentz, the current president of ASHRAE. It was 5 days of meetings from 8 am to 5 pm with evening social gatherings until late into the night. I encourage anyone under 35 to consider applying for this opportunity! ASHRAE society conducts an enormous amount of business to keep the chapters up and running each year. Almost all the work was performed by volunteers with support from the families and companies. Of the 1,800 members conducting society business this summer, only two were from the New Mexico chapter. I hope to help change the level of involvement in the New Mexico chapter and at the society level. Here are some ideas:

-If you are interested in standards and want to get updates on the most recent developments in standards you care about, join a Technical Committee!

-If you like organizing events and being at the center of the action, join a Standing Committee!

-If you like (or don’t like) the New Mexico chapter’s activities, join the New Mexico Board of Governors (e-mail me Stephen.forner@trane.com)!

-If you think the ASHRAE Journal got something wrong, tell the editor (jayscott@ashrae.org)!

I look forward to hearing about all the ways our chapter contributed to ASHRAE this year!

Dear Members,

As we say farewell to the Balloon Fiesta revelers and welcome in the cool (and economizer friendly) weather of autumn, I would like to update you on the happenings at this summer’s regional conference. Each summer the Chapter Regional Conference (CRC) is hosted by a rotating chapter. This summer the conference was in Omaha Nebraska, home of 2016-2017 ASHRAE Society President, Tim Wentz.

During the 2016 CRC, the New Mexico Chapter was recognized with many awards, almost too many to count! Awards include “Most Improved Chapter” which was awarded thanks to increasing support from the local community! Thank you to everyone who has participated in ASHRAE over the last 3 years! We also received the “Man-Mile Award” which is the award given to the chapter who brought the most people, the most distance total. Usually this award is given to a large chapter because the large chapters bring many people, but this CRC was centrally located and the New Mexico chapter brought many people to attend the meeting. Thank you to all who attended the CRC!

During the CRC the Board is able to meet with other chapter’s officers, regional and even Society delegates to get new ideas and infuse enthusiasm for ASHRAE’s goals. New members of the Board also get training on how to perform their roles on the Board. The Board also conducts the business of ASHRAE by voting on important motions which eventually make it to the Society to be implemented. This year an important motion was passed which allows the Region to sponsor up to 3 ASHRAE members under 35 years old to YEA Leadership Weekend. If you or someone you know are interested in attending YEA Leadership Weekend (a $900 training) free of charge, please contact me at stephen.forner@trane.com.

Another motion which passed this year was adding monitoring of chapter websites to the points system which grades chapter progress. Currently that is not a point which is monitored. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Stacey Chan (current Treasurer), the New Mexico Chapter scored the highest on the compliance scale! If you haven’t visited our website recently, it was upgraded last year: www.newmexicoashrae.com.

New Mexico Chapter will host the CRC in August 2019. About 200 Region IX members will descend on Albuquerque to keep the ASHRAE spirit thriving! If you are interested in volunteering or have suggestions for hotels, events, golf, activities or dinners, please contact me at stephen.forner@trane.com. The more ideas we get, the better the CRC will be! I look forward to an outpouring of creativity!

Welcome back from the summer to the 2016-2017 ASHRAE year. We have many tremendous programs planned for this year. In light of all the work the Board of Governors does to keep the chapter running, I would like to thank a couple of recent BOG members. As Seneca said “Men do not care how nobly they live, but only how long, although it is within the reach of every man to live nobly, but within no man's power to live long.” We must appreciate all the time that these two individuals invested in running the chapter during a drought in chapter leadership.

Morgan Royce just finished a two year stint as the Research Promotion chair. He raised over $15,000 for ASHRAE to invest in new research. Joe Higham just finished two years where he was the defacto president. He ran the chapter with adroitness and to great regional acclaim. His second year as President was the first year since 2011 where the chapter accomplished the regionally set PAOE goals. Thank you both for your enormous contributions.

In order for no volunteer to ever be asked commit to the extra time which Morgan and Joe gave to the chapter, we will be on a concerted Board of Governors recruitment campaign this year.

This space will serve as a series of points on the varied ways which you can be more involved in ASHRAE. My main ask: read the newsletter and sign up for events. As a first step to encourage this participation, anyone who contacts me with suggestions on how to better the chapter before the first meeting will receive entrance to a chapter meeting of their choosing this year paid by me. The Nebraska Chapter would like to welcome you to attend 2016 ASHRAE Region IX Chapter Regional Conference in Omaha, Nebraska. This will be held August 3rd through August 6th. Omaha is the most centrally located city in the U.S. For all that you will get to do and experience at this year’s CRC, it will be well worth the travel. 

The conference is open to all ASHRAE members. It’s a valuable chance to network with regional and society officers that you may never get a chance to see at national summer and winter meetings. Committee chairs will have access to specialized training seminars. All attendees will have free access the 2016 Nebraska Architectural Engineering Conference technical sessions and expo!

The Nebraska Architectural Engineering Conference (NAEC) is a one day event. The event consists of a 20 technical sessions on different building systems, technologies and applications. In addition to the technical presentations throughout the day, there will be a large central exposition with product representatives and their products and services for a wide variety of building materials and technologies. Continuing education credits are available to session attendees. 

And this year we will have a special welcome for Tim Wentz, our new society president who will be giving his presidential address.  He is bringing friends including past presidents and vice presidents who have heard the rumors of Region IX’s legendary CRCs and wanted to see for themselves.  We may also have special visits from local political leaders and industry celebrities.

Large Data Center Cooling applications have many different air handling and primary cooling options. This presentation discusses in depth the advantages and disadvantages of various methods of cooling including chilled water, indirect and direct evaporative cooling and direct expansion (refrigerant). The presentation will then take a deeper dive into indirect and direct evaporative cooling as appropriate for dry climates such as New Mexico. Finally, a review of the basic control strategies for large data center applications will conclude the presentation.

About the Speaker
Tifft Gannon is the Strategic Sales Manager for Liebert Thermal Management, where his primary responsibility involve assisting customers in conceptual design work for large data center projects. Prior to this role he was the Liebert AHU Product Manager overseeing product development and key product launches. Before joining Emerson, he had over 8 years in account management experience with a large HVAC equipment and controls manufacturer. There Tifft gained experience in the commercial application of chilled water and air handler equipment, as well as the associated system level controls. Tifft holds a BS in mechanical engineering from The Ohio State University.
